Summary of Doctors Weyrich and Gear's comments on "The Cycles of Life"
In the Disney movie "Lion King," there is a song about the "Circle of Life." However, there is not ONE circle of life, but many. Dr. Weyrich will talk a bit about some of the more important circles. These are all "cyclical rhythms of life."
A cyclical rhythm is anything in the body or environment that goes up and down at a more or less fixed speed. The speed of each different cyclical rhythm is controlled in part by "clocks" in the body and by events in the environment. The speed is usually called the "frequency". The body has many different "clocks" that keep track of the cyclical rhythms of life. This includes, listed from fastest frequency to slowest:
- Brainwaves (1 to 100 times a second). Different brain states are associated with different brain activities, which we can measure using a computer and sensors attached to the scalp. From slowest to fastest, these brainwaves are called delta, alpha, theta, beta, and gamma. Delta is associated with sleep and gamma is associated with intense thought. In between, the alpha state is between 8 and 12 times a second, and is associated with a calm, relaxed state. Dr. Weyrich is board certified in using neurofeedback to teach you how to self-regulate your mental state.
- Schumann ionosphere resonances (about 8 times a second). The entire Earth vibrates with electromagnetic energy called the Schumann resonances that repeats at a rate of about 8 times a second. This is considered to be a "healing" frequency that corresponds to "calm, relaxed" alpha brain waves. What a coincidence! The ancient Indian Vedas called this the frequency of Om. Note that this is not actually a sound we can hear - it is below our range of hearing. We perceive this frequency as a vibration. We will talk more about how we can use this to improve our health later in today's show.
- The heart beat (50 to 100 times a minute). It is interesting that the heart rate goes up when you inhale and goes down when you exhale. In a young healthy person, the heart rate may change from 50 to 80 beats per minute with each breathing cycle. We have Heart-Rate-Variability biofeedback equipment in our office that can help teach you to improve this heart rate variability. You can call (928) 474-7409 to make an appointment with Dr. Weyrich for a free 15-minute demonstration of this technology.
- The breath (12 to 20 times a minute). There are health benefits of learning how to synchronize your heart beating and your breathing. The benefits include better self-regulation of emotional state, lowering your blood pressure, improving mental focus, and even improving your golf game.
- The craniosacral rhythm (6 to 12 times a minute). This is thought to be a pulsing of the cerebrospinal fluid, but the control mechanism is not clear. It may be controlled either by the production or removal of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. Doctor Gear, you are trained in craniosacral evaluation and treatment. Can you tell us more about the craniosacral rhythm? Dr Gear: Yes, the craniosacral rhythm you mentioned is altered, slowed or increased, by injury. When the injury is recent and inflammation is present the rhythm is speeded up. When the injury has become chronic, that is the fixation or damage has continued to be present longer than the time of the initial body reaction, then the craniosacral rhythm is slowed down. A blow to the head can alter the ability of the joints of the skull to perform their microscopic movements with each pulsation. Damage to the joints of the pelvis causes them to lose their ability to expand and contract with the pulsing of the central nervous system that is the brain and spinal cord. These areas directly affect the parasympathetic nervous system causing blood vessels to be tighter than they should be.
- The daily circadian cycle (once per 24 hours). This big word comes from scientific Latin. "circa" means "around about" and "dian" means "day". This is very important, since many of our hormones change in a predictable way around the time of day. For example, cortisol is normally high in the morning and low in the evening, while melatonin is normally high in the evening. These hormones control how well we sleep. We have genetic testing and hormone testing that can help us normalize your sleep, which is important for a long healthy life. If you are having trouble sleeping, you can schedule for a free 15-minute consult with Dr. Weyrich by calling (928) 474-7409.
- The monthly circumlunar cycle (once per 28 days) that is so important for women. Again, this comes from the Latin words for "around about" and "moon." If this cycle is disrupted, problems from infertility to heavy, painful menses can result. There are many naturopathic treatments for these problems. Another word related to the cycle of the moon's phases is the word "lunatic," which according to the Oxford English Dictionary comes from the Latin "luna" meaning moon, with the "-atic" suffix meaning "of the kind of," based on the observation that it seems that crazy behavior increases at the time of the full moon, which is sometimes called "moonstruck." If you are having a problem with fertility or your menstrual cycle, you can schedule for a free 15-minute consult with Dr. Weyrich by calling (928) 474-7409.
- The annual circumsolar seasonal variations (once per 365 days). You guessed it; this is the cycle that repeats every time the Earth moves around the sun. T.S. Wiley, the inventor of the Wiley protocol of female hormone replacement therapy, discusses in her book "Lights Out" how modern society disrupts the natural circumsolar rhythm with modern electrical appliances that keep us awake long into the night, and with an endless food supply, which she describes as endless summer. In a real Paleolithic diet, the food supply varied with the season, with summer being the time to pig out on fruits to build up fat to carry us through the lean time of winter, when the only thing available to eat was an occasional squirrel or deer.
- The sunspot cycle (once per 11 years). Not only does this disrupt radio communications, but it also affects the Schumann ionosphere resonances. There is a research paper entitled "Sunspot Dynamics Are Reflected in Human Physiology and Pathophysiology" that can be found in PubMed, the National Library of Medicine. In this paper, scientists report a correlation with sunspot activity and oral temperature, pulse, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiration, and peak expiratory flow, as well as diseases detected by Pap smears.
- We cannot control the sun, but we can control our exposure to Schumann resonance by a technique called Earthing. You can read all about it in a book called Earthing. Basically, we can enhance our access to Schumann resonance by connecting ourselves to the Earth by walking on dewed grass in our bare feet or sleeping on special sheets that have silver or copper wires in them that are in turn connected to an Earth ground. This is a technique that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. You can schedule for a free 15-minute consult with Dr. Weyrich by calling (928) 474-7409. for a demonstration of the device Dr. Weyrich uses for Earthing.
- There is one last celestial cycle important to human health and prosperity that needs mention, one that occurs every multi-thousand years. And that is the Ice Age cycle. Geologists tell us that there have been many cycles of global cooling called "ice ages" that are all followed by periods of warming (called inter-glacial periods). In general, life on Earth prospers during the warm phase of each cycle, and suffers during the cold phase. There are various theories about why this happens, but clearly variations in the sun's output (similar to the sunspot cycle, but much slower and not as regular) are associated with changes in weather and climate. Unfortunately, we currently have no model that reliably predicts changes in solar output, which limits our ability to construct a reliable model of global climate change. For further discussion of these phenomena, see Dr. Weyrich's blog/podcasts: What is Truth? Part 2, The Butterfly Effect and Ill-conditioned Systems What is Truth? Part 3, Lysenko and the Politicization of Science.
The study of the cycles of life is fascinating, and this brief discussion only scratches the surface!
